Equipped with knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer turns out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books and dictionaries into multi-layered detailed carving. Dettmer starts by manipulating the pages and spines to form the shape of the base and through the process not relocate or add anything within the books, only removes portions of the pages to build dimension.

Come see Brian Dettmer’s work in the flesh in the New York exhibition, “A Cut Above: 12 Paper Masters” at The Christopher Henry Gallery, New York from May 10 – June 24, 2012.
